Sling straps and knock off grips

Has anyone used a sling with an off brand grip for any period of time?

I took off my grip to fit my sling as I'm not 100% on the strength of the grips tripod socket. Problem is I hated the feel of my camera without the grip on.

I'm not using a big lens just an 18-55VR.

Needless to say I will be upgrading to a Nikon grip when funds allow, but until then am I safe or shall I just go strapless and carry the camera.

I would say frailties can occur no matter if its third party or OE.

Why not use the strap hoops on the body of camera?

I have a Black Rapid on a D3100 with Meike (spelling?) grip and a Nikon 17-55 (heavy) lens.

12 months in and no trouble so far.

I hate them! I'd rather carry it than use a neck strap.

Sounds good then. It's a optech but I'm using a BR fastenr so its the same near enough.

Still will upgrade in time though.

I was a bit worried using a BlackRapid strap with my gripped D300/Sigma 105-500 or Nikon 70-200 lenses because of the weight.

Turns out I was right to worry ... but it wasn't the tripod mount on the grip that failed. The screw that mounts the grip to the body came out of the grip completely. The plastic gear that meshes with the big thumbwheel broke up and the screw simply came out of the grip's housing - pretty dreadful design and mediocre manufacturing quality. Fortunately I used to keep my hand on the camera anyway, even when it was hanging by my side, so I felt it give and managed to prevent the body/lens from hitting the floor.

Make of the grip - Nikon :shake:

I now use a Mieke one but the mechanism design is virtually identical so I don't use the grip if I've got a heavy lens fitted, or I don't use the BR strap.

I've had a Meike grip on my 550D and it's now on the wifes 650D and it's almost 2 years old now. For the last year or so it was on a Q-strap sling with all sorts of lenses and I've never had any problems with it. For the big lenses with a foot with them I usually connect the strap to the foot as it balances better for me.
