Bizarre. Modern take on the 18-135mm kit lens of years ago? Will it replace the current 18-105 VR? Will Nikon ever give us some wide DX primes, or other interesting DX kit? :bonk:
 
I thought it was a good range of focal lengths. I don't know how it fits into their current range though.

The only autofocus lens I own is an 18-70 AF-S but if I didn't have that, the new 18-140 would be interesting to me.

Just 4 nikon dx lenses 2.8 or better, only 2 of those mainstream lenses (the 17-55 and 35 1.8).

no fast vr dx lenses at all.
 
I was thinking same. Sigma are making Nikon look the n00bs lately.

What is the point of this lens?? I had to keep re-checking when reading on it, to see if it had ANYTHING interesting to separate it from the mounds of other similar lenses. Nope, no 2.8, no extra width over a bog-standard kit lens that costs about 1/5th of this one, no pizzaz ... nothing ...
 
Sorry, have to say...

With the 70d announced from canon along with sigma's new stuff and an already great lineup of Nikon kit lenses...this...for nearly £600...sucks.

Should have been f4 to go with something like the fx 24-120mm.

Anyway, we need some innovation!

Kit lens for the D400 was the rumour. Seems a bit of an odd choice from Nikon to focus on this (well covered) segment of the market when other companies like Sigma are innovating.
 
It certainly seems an odd lens to announce, and having little enthusiasm anywhere I've seen. :thinking:

18-55mm, 3x zoom
18-105mm, 5.8x zoom
18-140mm, 7.7x zoom
18-200mm, 11x zoom
18-300mm, 16.6x zoom

Was the gap in the 105mm - 200mm range really in need of a lens to fill the gap? :shrug: I don't think so. :shake: There are other more interesting lenses they could have designed.

If the lens would have been a 16-85mm f4 lens, then I would have been impressed, and it maybe would have shown that Nikon were taking the DX range seriously. As for the 18-140mm, meh! :shrug:

As a reasonably happy owner of a current 16-85, I agree totally... Could Nikon not produce some decent, reasonably priced f4 DX zooms?
 
I've got a D7100 coming and I was going to source another 18-200 to replace my broken one. But having read the DXO based reviews they all suggest the 18-140 is far superior, especially on the newer larger DX sensors.

So i've changed my plans and got a 18-140 coming too instead of the plan to get a 18-200.

Hopefully the IQ upgrade will mitigate the missing reach.
