Recently purchased a Solid State Drive (Intel 160GB X25-M) to function as a primary (boot) drive in my main desktop.

I'd read a number of reports highlighting the gains to be had against a more conventional sata hard drive, but none particularly related to the real world of processing that togs employ regularly.

Therefore, I thought I would run a number of tests, comparing like for like, SSD against a conventional sata drive, looking at a number of applications that are generally important to post processing images.

For the test set-up, I installed windows 7 (64bit) on two hard drives within the same desktop, first drive a conventional 1TB sata drive (no RAID configuration), second hard drive, 160 GB SSD, the drives in a dual boot setup. With virtually bare bone drives with just the operating system , I loaded CS4 on each, configured similarly, with memory usage(via preferences...performance) at 80 % on each (5737mb), with a separate partition on each individual drive as a scratch disk.

I removed all peripherals except for monitor, keyboard and mouse.

The base desktop configuration- Quad processor (i7 2.8 GHz), 8GB Memory, twin Nvidia 9500GT Graphics cards.

I ran each test 3 times (except for tests 1-5 and test 10) and took the average of the 3 tests for each drive.

Test breakdown:

Tests 1 to 5 relate to the Windows Experience score:
1-Processor: calculations per second
2-Memory (RAM): memory operations per second
3-Graphics: Desktop performance for Windows Aero
4-3D Business and gaming graphics
5-Primary hard disk-Disk data transfer rate
6-Windows start up, from pressing 'enter' at the dual boot screen to actual desktop appearing on screen.
7-CS4 start-up, from clicking the CS4 icon to CS4 opening-no plug-ins installed.
8-Dragging 7 tiff (125mb total) files into CS4 to open simultaneously, identical tiff files each on respective source drive (sata or SSD)
9-Copy 30 raw files (214mb) from SD card (via card reader) to source drive (either sata or SSD)
10-Loading 1 tiff file of 105mb( 4992 x 3328 pixels) and applying surface blur filter-radius 100, levels 255
11-Same file-box blur filter applied- 999 pixels
12-Copy 4 video files (6.59 GB) from source drive to source drive i.e. from 1 folder in sata drive to another folder on same drive and partition, similarly with SSD.
13-Copy same video files from a separate internal sata drive to source drive (sata or SSD)
14-Copy same files from source drive to separate sata drive.

Test Results (tests 1-5 higher is better, 6-14 lower is better)

Thoughts.

Although the tests were not the most scientific, the results tend to favour the SSD drive as being generally faster.

I noticed this also after the tests, when I'd set up the OS (and activated) on a single (SSD) drive, programmes just seemed to spring to life immediately without any lag.

From the tests, very surprised that the windows boot uptime was around twice as long for the sata drive against the SSD ,CS4 start up was equally impressive in the SSD.

Copying large files (or a number of small files) resulted in a significant (but not as dramatic) difference in performance.

Less of a difference appeared to be the processing power within CS4, although I employed some extreme filtration effects, (one lasting 18 minutes), the difference between the drives was not as great as the other tests.

Not really surprised at the windows experience score, as the only variable in the tests was the hard drive, reflected in the respective scores.

On the downside, the cost of SSD drives is a major factor, with the retail price around £2 per GB, although will likely fall over time.

Am I pleased I took the plunge and splashed out -you bet :)
 
That does look interesting, I'm certainly going to spec an SSD when I get my next laptop.
 
Thanks for that comparison, I guess we'll all be using them in the next couple of years. The biggest benefit I think is the low power drain compared to a conventional drive so great in laptops.
 
Looks like you have saved roughly 40 seconds of your life, hardly enough time to boil an egg though :D

No offence- but you don't mention the sata drive that you used- which would have a massive impact on the results...
 
the speed is in the seek time

for general processing of photos I don't see it being hugely helpful...

have you seen this youtube vid though?? fun for geeks, not for anyone else...I might have seen it on here to be honest...

I don't disagree with what you say :) , and I'm aware that different hard drives would result in different times, although looking at some of the reviews, most of the latest SSD's seem to be faster than most standard sata hard drives, the notable exception being a velociraptor , which generally came close to SSD.

I didn't originally mention the name of the sata drive, as I very much wanted to avoid the typical bun fights you sometimes get in these kind of posts, like 'If you'd used a XXX drive instead of YYY drive it would have blown the socks.....etc'

I really wanted to compare a box standard sata hard drive, similar to ones a lot of folk have sitting in their desktops, to a solid state drive.
 
I wasn't going to start a war- was just interested :) (though I might have said something if it was a slow 5,400 "green" drive....)
 
Another real world kind of test, batch processing , took 132 tif files (5.6 GB), and batch proceessed them in CS4, sequence-open, re-size each image to 800 pixels along the long side, sharpen (100, 1,1), save for web as jpg at 300k, close.

Each batch of tif files copied to a folder on the respective hard drive (ssd or sata)

The sata drive took 3.01 minutes to complete the batch process, with the SSD taking 2.41 minutes, so a difference of 20 secs (hardly enough time to boil half an egg :) )
 
I'm still waiting to jump on the SSD bandwagon in the new year when they are shipping with reliable and well written firmware out of the box that includes TRIM functionality. I'd also like to see pricing nearer to £1=1GB rather than the current prices.

Did you optimize the SSD and align it?

i did actually LOL at the super fast defrag bit though, thats one of the first things they tell you to turn off on SSD.

I'm still waiting to jump on the SSD bandwagon in the new year when they are shipping with reliable and well written firmware out of the box that includes TRIM functionality

Interesting thread -thanks for posting.

I'm drawn to an SSD for my primary, although I'm waiting for prices to come down and specs to stabilize.

The only other thing that concerns me is their finite lifespan, although I suppose nowt lasts forever.

I'm thinking they're at the stage where another year of waiting should see significant improvements in tech as well as falling prices.

Long term we would all move to SSD or Fusion drives on pci-e cards. The limitation with SSD speed is on the SATA connection. However if you move the connection to PCIe then you get straight onto the main memory bus. And if money really is no object then you have to buy a FusionIO drive. (Uses NAND chips on a PCIe board.) They have a proof of concept drive that offers 1TB per sec of data throughput. Their retail FusionIO IOdrive Duo 320GB available for $14500 and transfers at 1.4GB per sec

Laptop drives are generally slower than desktop ones like for like (eg a 7,200 and 7,200 or 5,400 and 5,400) so even compared against a fast 7,200 RPM laptop HDD the SSD will show bigger gains, against a 5,400RPM drive the SSD almost certainly would blow the socks off the HDD.

Les your results show just how important the processor is in photo editing as well. Although the faster the drive the better for opening the file in the first place (and the occasional scratch collecting) the processor is the most important once the image is loaded.

Exactly.
The average user is throwing money away on an SSD. The only people they benefit are serious benchmarkers.
