Hello!

Basically, I only own a digital compact camera (Nikon Coolpix P3) - no expensive SLRs for me, and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get the most out of it, particularly for macro photography? :) Also feel free to fiddle with them, I don't own photoshop, just the standard software that comes with the camera...and I'm looking at canvassing a few for my bedroom...!

Here are some of my attempts over the past year or so...

Critisicms welcome!

A nice set of shots, I dont think you need tips on how to get the most out of the camera.
your doing just fine (y)
(BUT Your second shot is a little bright probably a little too close the the `Thing` but otherwise all brilliant )

Thanks - I'll have you know that 'thing' is lovely

The backgrounds on some of the shots are a little busy, any good way to make a matt black or white background that doesn't reflect flash?

Here are some more shots... :)

More to the point have you any tips you'd like to share with us :p

That's a lovely set of shots of "things" we hardly ever see on here :)

Hi,
I don't think you need any help with getting the most out of the camera - you've got some great shots. I particularly like the 1st Chameleon - nice, natural lighting.

Cheers Rick - I've still got a lot to learn though! The particular shot I took this morning on my windowsill - shame the background's a bit busy!

Signing up to this site has prompted me to look through all my oldish pictures, and found this one that I quite like.
It's what our guide called a 'boobie frenzy'...

Welcome :)

Some of those shots are very nice.

I think you should consider a diffuser if you can fit one on your camera somehow (could be just a piece of thin white paper).

Many of those shots have a nice depth of field, but you could work a bit on the background - in some of them, it's too busy.

Also, if you can get some smaller reflectors, it might help when lighting is difficult to set up.

As for a free image editing solution, the GIMP is pretty handy and the price is right (it's free).

OK I'm getting rid of DSLR and buying a coolpix you can tell me how to use it, your doing great with it well done.
