I have just recived my 70-200 f4.0 and would like a bit of plastic that fits on the front that would protect it from dust and any stones that kick up (cameras used mainly for motorsport)
Do these have any effects on image quality and what is the name i should search for, i had a quick search and looked at one but it changed the colours on the picture which i dont want.

Hoya do lens protector filters, quite expensive but less than a UV filter, very high quality though, Pro1 Digital series MC coated. Well worth it in a rough environment in my view.

what you're looking for is called a UV filter

the filters you were looking at were probably slightly tinted (magenta?) used for film photography

it shouldn't change the colours as it's basically just clear glass, it cuts down UV haze and protects the front of the lens. Yes it can effect image quality, especially if you get a cheap one as you might get reflections or lens flare if it's not coated glass.

I would personally use hoya multicoated filters

Quality being the main reason, please read my post again, dont get a UV filter, Pro 1 Lens protector is not a UV filter so its a lot cheaper but still top quality.

to be honest id just use the hood. i used to have UV's for rallying but dont bother anymore, common sense and dont wave the front element in the direction of flying gravel and youll do fine. plus anything flying that fast to do any damage will likely puncture a filter.

Thanks for the comment, didnt really think about the fact that it would probabley go straight through, think ill just do what you said and keep the lens hood on, thanks for your help guys.
What about the dust that gets kicked up or would the fact its a L it shouldnt let in any dust even if its not a weather sealed version?

with the 70-200 f4 while it may not be weather sealed dust shouldnt have any easy route into the lens if at all so cant see it being a problem. if it were a push/pull lens like the 100-400 that may be different (some people say even that is fine).
