Not the lens itself but you may find 50mm too short if you want to do bugs and insects. the longer the lens the more didtance between you and the subject at 1:1 magnification which is always a good thing where bees are concerned (for instance).
i agree with mike.P.....i would suggest getting a focal length of about the 90mm-105mm.sony macro lens are not cheap,so i'd suggest looking at the sigma and tamron offerings which are as good as the sony IQ wise,and you'll save a few shillings to boot.
