Can someone please help with diagnosis and hopefully cure of a problem that has just developed with my Sony Alpha 300?
At switch on, rather than doing the usual "small shake" for around half a second that is designed to try and keep the dust away. My camera is really rattling for around five seconds
It's also doing the same when I turn off too.
The sound can only be described as being like it's trying to take 30 or more frames per second.

Just the standard Sony supplied lens that it came with.
I have just tried a couple of other lenses and did not get the problem.

Is your SS indicator flashing? Excessive shaking on power up usually indicates a broken SS.
 
When turning the camera on, the AF cycles through the focus range to establish that a lens is present. When turning it off the camera resets the lens to infinity. In MF mode this does not happen, so try turning AF to MF then turn the camera off and on again. If the noise goes away then it's likely that the AF ring gear that has failed. It's a pretty rare occurrence with Sony or Minolta lenses but not impossible if the lens has been heavily used.
 
on an A300 it'll be SuperSteadyShot but later on it became SteadyShot INSIDE.
 
it sounds like the AF gear on the lens has gone - I've heard of a few 18-70s doing this.
cheaper to replace than fix or upgrade to the 18-55 SAM (or better).
