sparks will fly

Haven't had the camera out for a while so thought it was time to pick it up and shoot something.
As the wife won't let me have the 50D until Xmas I have to make do with the 1000D.
Anyway here is the result of a dark room, some off camera flash and an indoor sparkler (not the easiest thing to shoot due to inconsistent burn)

Yes the sparks were certainly very close to the front of the lens.
I tried to pr-empt how far they would go with a dummy setup but with sparklers you can never tell as they don't burn in a consistent manner.

I want to try this shot in the future, but I will probably look to shoot through a glass screen? or protect the camera and lens.
