Starting Nikon DSLR for my neice

Hi guys, my niece is showing a real interest in photography and my brother was talking about buying her a bridge camera for her birthday. Now I've said to him he'd be better off buying her a cheaper second hand DSLR, trouble is I don't know what. I've got two lenses I can lend to her a 18-55mm kit lens and a 55-200mm, not sure what older bodies these will work on? I don't really know about a budget at the moment but probably more towards the cheaper end. She's only 13 (maybe 14 on her birthday) so she she'll need something not too big or heavy.

Any help much appreciated :thumbs:
 
Something like a D40 sounds perfect.
Still a great camera, easy to use, and most of all cheap to buy.
 
D40, D40x, D60 should all be relatively cheap on the SH market these days. If you want new then the D3100.

Pretty much echoing all the comments before, and probably those to come as well.

I still use my D40x and it's a fine small DSLR. in fact I'd say I've done some of my favourite stuff with it. Something like that should suit your niece well.
 
All AF-S lenses will fully work with the D40.
All AF lenses will work but wont autofocus
 
Depending on budget D5000's seem to go for £250-£275 on the classifieds. Couple for sale at the moment. It's a great camera for the money and both your lenses will work.

the mrs started on one & it was nice & easy to learn on. small & light too
plus with the 2 lenses you mentioned it can deliver really good images
went through some old folders the other day & there seems to be just that little extra something from that CCD sensor that she cant seem to find as easily with her D90

if you're not a slave to the latest & greatest no reason a camera from a couple of generations back is no good :)
