Starting point settings for star trails

Hello,

I've had a go at a couple of star trails but without any success. Given that the exposure times are long can anyone give me a starting point for star trails so that I don't waste too much time. Tried exposure times ranging from 5-26 minutes but mess up the ISO and probably every other setting every time.
