Hi all!!
I am new to this, and I don’t really know how to use it, so I will try my best.

I am a student photographer at Leeds City College and have a keen interest in studio and wedding photography. I have done a couple of weddings, music events, parties and portraits. I would one day like to set up my own studio while doing other shoots on the side to get some extra money.

Can anyone give me an idea of how to get here? Any skills I need?

Anything would be great help,
Thanks a lot

There are so many things to consider.
Do you want a shop, a warehouse or a set-up in your garage for personal work?

Thanks guys, im looking to having like a studio with my friends as we thought it would be easier money wise, at the moment i am doing weddings, parties and gigs, and when ig et the time i use my college studio to do some shots, what sort of work does anyone do that is similar to mine??

i haven't got any on the internet now as i m worried about people stealing my work from what i have heard before. i am going to start up puttin g my own flickr up soon though so i can show more people examples of my work, i have done 2 weddings so far and have another 2 ready to shoot next year.

Don't forget if people can't see your work then how do you expect to promote your work?

my original question was

Can anyone give me an idea of how to get here? Any skills I need? weddings, music events, parties and portraits,

Asking for advice, as i know that my images are of a professional standard.
anything about getting your own studio or how to get more clients.

You say about starting it with friends to keep cost down but then you have to take in the fact of how big of a studio do you want? And then are you all going to be able to share the time between you all to be able to make enough money to cover your side of the overheads?

If that makes sense?

can you not give me any help?

Jessica,

You have posted in the general forum, where there are likely to be a majority of purely amateur members. Not that they don't/can't have valid comments and ideas but you're more likely to get business oriented advice in the business forum.

Don't be afraid they're a pretty welcoming bunch :)

It is difficult to offer advice and mention skills you need without seeing examples of your work.
What you might consider professional, others may consider not so much.

We have a good group of people here, who shoot many things. Some of the "amatuer" photographers here produce work that is above the standards of some of the "professionals" on here.

As far as the studio is concerned, you never answered my question. Do you want a shop studio, a warehouse location etc. Both have pro's and con's and I'm at a situation myself where this is something I am also looking in to. Feel free to drop me a pm

We had a word with the enterprise team at college, and we suggested of having a studio together to the lower the costs till we get better in our finacial situation, we all work different shifts at the minute so it should not be a problem with who has the studio as some other like me prefer outside of the studio work rather then in studios, like i like photographing gigs, parties and weddings etc, relating to were we would havethe studio i think we were havig problems discussing were we would look into renting, would MJ Stebbings be able to ive me some advice on were would be best to have a studio as this is something that we have not thought of, and would could somebody please tell me how to get notifications of replies please?

you have a pm

Not that I have a studio or do photography for anything more than because I enjoy but imo:

If you're pictures arn't online, as someone has already said nobody is going to see them. Fair enough if your worried about them getting stolen (watermarking properly can reduce this) but if you don't at least have a half decent portfolio / website you will be fighting an uphill battle.

Last year we went to a studio to have some family pictures done. How did we find them? We went on the internet and chose the ones with the best portfolio and good examples of thier work.

It's difficult to convince someone to pay for your work if they can't see what they are getting for thier money.

That aside, if you prefer shooting outside of the studio then I can't see putting money towards a studio would be a good idea.

I don't know what equipment you're using but would it (the money) be better served upgrading it?

and welcome to TP! Big question for a first post lol
