strange goldcrest behaviour and question

Yes
I took the dog for a walk today and came across a goldcrest mooching around in the nettles about 2 feet away. He seemed "torpid" and stayed flitting by my feet for ages. So close I could have picked him up. I hadn't taken my camera because it was Soooo foggy and dark today . zero chance of "natural " photos.
Typical.
So I went back to get my camera and half hour later he was still there then seemed to warm up and fly off.
This afternoon I went back to the same spot and there were a couple more looking fit and healthy but feeding at almost ground level. This time I managed a poor shot with flash...
Anyway do they normally feed low when its so cold?
What could I feed them?
Also I know flash produces iffy results but is there a trick like a filter colour that doesn't get that horrid "flash eye" look? It seems different to human red eye but its still not a good look. Does anyone use a diffuser to shoot in poor light.
Oh and to show how close he was this was shot at 100mm ish  My lens goes to 300 but I couldn't find him very easy...

Fat based food for them.
Probably very hungry.
