I filled out a form for a CRB with a childrens football club I wil be photographing.. Even though I always maintain I dont need one as a photographer but hey ho club policy...

Anyways it seems a nice lady from the FA CRB unit called Mellanie has called the clubs welfare officier and said I dont fall under the criteria of needing a CRB as I wont be in direct contact with children.. So they wont even process the application.

Kinda puts the whole do I need one issue to rest :)

I was at AFC Wimbledon's match on Saturday and there was the club's match mascot walking around with the girl who was going to be the match mascot.

Thought best not to take a picture of them to avoid any possible problems as I was only a member of the public who had been allowed to take in the D300.

Curious to know M8 what do the FA CRB unit term as direct access? Did they say?

Nope.. just that a photographer taking pictures of football matches does not come under the criteria

I'm just wondering if the parents will take the same view as the FA knowing how some can react nowadays.

It has occured to me since.. how do you explain it when someone asks if you ahve one.. its gonna look like I am twisting out of it or soemhting :(

Just state that you sent the FA a request for one as you wanted to be covered and they notified you that it is not neccesary.

its not twisting out of it then and take a proof of the email etc.. you recieved stating so from the FA

Did the FA confirm it in writing?

phone call to the clubs welfare officer... hmmmm

gonna look up the fa crb unit email and ask for confirmation in writing...

I was thinking they may have been asked by club to confirm it in writing or offerered to do so.

Well I fired off a nice email to crb @ the fa.com

I explained the response my application got that wouldnt be processed as I dont qualify for a crb as a photographer. I explained that increasingly more and more organisations welfare officers are asking for one and how it would be nice to show them somehting official or point them to an online resource that clarifies the situation..

I wrote it better than that but the above is the jist

I await a response... am holding my breath :)

Funnily enough I sent off mine for renewal this week, although I understand the systems changing later this year.
I'm told (but don't know how true this is) that the database being set up will hold ALL convictions and even allegations. The person who told me who's a teacher claimed a lot of his colleagues have had false allergations made, he's been told that these will still count, even if proved false, and will still be on the database. He also said that there is a lot of concern in the teaching profession about this.

I think they are still technically wrong....its because you will not be in sole control of children, thats why you do not need one.

correct.. no contact with children so not applicable.. I actualy agree witht hem.. but it doesnt help my situation when asked to produce one.. its gonna look like i am making up stories :( Hopefully the crb unit will understand the predicament

otherwise i will just have to fill out forms for everyone that asks and let them find out the hard way... but the long way ..

ISA is the body that's going to oversee this I think.

There was a minor stir when Phillip Pullman and a few other authors said they were going to stop going into schools as a result of having to go through this process despite not ever being alone with children.

And, yes, allegations and gossip will now be there too.

correct.. no contact with children so not applicable.

That makes sense. You're no different to a member of the public watching or taking pictures.

They're certainly not going to insist on everyone turning up to watch being CRB checked so why should you be any different?

Steve.

I agree 100% with you Steve,.. now can you go convince all the club welfare officers :)

I ahve had a fairly decent reply from the fa.. I ahve in turn replied and asked if I can copy the contents to other photographers and anyone asking for a CRB .. its quite clear on the subject and a good response.

If challenged, surely you can say that your details where passed to the FA, who have returned the enquiry without any problems?

Or something liek that.

I was driving home from Oulton park on saturday when I saw a village green cricket match in progress so I stopped and wandered over.

There was a guy keeping score at the clubhouse so I asked if anyone would object to me taking a few shots:)

er um well I think everyone is over 18 but you better check with the captain.

er um well were're all over 18 but it's the other team are they all over 18 I don't know.

When I asked it hadn't even occurred to me it would start a major debate, while the umming and arring was going on a mum of one of the younger players said, bloody hell let him take some pictures, what the hell is wrong with you they're only playing cricket :D

so I did

hmm interesting.. The response I got from the FA mentions a new system that may help me that comes into force in July 2010 but no other info..

The CRB check was used for people working with children and vulnerable adults who could be in a position to form a relationship with a child/ adult as a means of protection.

I have had mine for many years through the fire service as I worked with young people over sometimes long periods (17 weeks), although fire service personnel meet children within schools and at events like open days etc, they are not classed as being in a position to form relationships or close contact, as you will never see the children again, so they do not need to be CRB checked. like Kipax has been told by the FA

From October this goes to a new organisation which will get its information from data collected by the CRB and comes in the wake of the Bichard inquiry into Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, which asked if the way employers checked backgrounds of employees was reliable.

Here is the linky to the new organisation http://www.isa-gov.org.uk/default.aspx

They have a FAQ section which may go some way to helping anyone with queries, hope it helps

but still requires a crb.. or near enough according to the faq.

I got the postal order back today and a FA compliment slip with a hand written note ... This was sent to the club who passed onto me...

"As per telephone call. A Greenwood does not meeet the criteria for an enhanced CRB. Please find enclosed his Postal order"

In writing on FA CRB slip.. but could also look like I was refused one cus I failed.. aaaargh :(

Well today i recieved another form from another football club who want me to be crb checked (do I look dodgy haha) I darn't try to explain all this to them as it just looks bad.. So as they are paying I will just let them find out the hard way... oh hum.

to be honest I think it never hurts to have one, It shows your intent and is a safeguard for the clients, I had 2 at one time because they are not transferable between organisations, which seems really daft.

I hope that this new setup manages to get it right, but knowing the government in 2 years when we have all gone and done it, it will change back again....lol :bang:
