Hi folks, I recently got a new Dell PC, and all seems fine. It's running Vista and plays music from the hard drive no problem - that is until I do something on the internet. It's as if everything is focused on the internet and the sound starts stuttering. As if it can't do the two things at once.

Is there a setting that maybe tells it to focus everything on the internet?

TIA

Allan

Could be many things.

Is it the computer or the speakers? Try connecting some headphones and seeing if there is still stuttering.

Is it onboard sound? if so is there enough memory in the pc?

Could be a driver conflict maybe.

How are you connecting to the internet? Ethernet cable and a router/modem?

What model is the computer.

connecting to internet via ethernet to a router

3Gb of memory - apologies

Its worth checking out where the ATI video card gets it 512mb of memory either it will have its own dedicated memory or it will assign 512mb of system memory as video memory which would mean that you are down to 2.5gb of memory for Vista to use.

Have a look at Task manager (right click on the task bar and click on task manager), click on the performance tab and watch the CPU usage while sound is playing and you are on the internet. Check what CPU usage is going on when you get the stutters.

the XPS's should have dedicated graphics cards/memory. the 4850 is in fact a dedicated card, i just googled it.

id check to see if there is an updated soundcard driver, either via the dell website or check in device manager as to what the card is and then google the manufacturer.

what software are you using to listen to music? and what browser?

Have you tried using a different music player?
