Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback earlier on the best use of PP on these images. I decided to simply do all three, rather than leaving some out and always wondering.

Anyway, apologies for the number of pics, would have been 9 if I had only carried out 1 set of PP.

Hope you enjoy:

Style One: Very close to what I seen, the most realistic set.

Gary - I dont think the Duo-tones really works...I think there are too many dark-dark area's.

As for the coloured versions - different pictures suit the different style of procesisng. x

Thanks for the feedback Dell, appreciated! Was awesome sunset, I was knee deep in mucky wet sand, about 100 metres from the beach. Was worried about sinking :D

Gary.

awww - i go abroad in 4 weeks - whats best advice for sunset pics? x

Me? Advice?

Well, I dunno. I have no filter as my lens will not take one (14 to 24). I shoot manual, and meter for the sky, with a touch of under exposure. I then always bracket the shots, take maybe 5 exposured seperated by 1 stop each, which will give you 2 under, 1 as you choose it, and 2 over. This will allow you to merge sky and foreground back at home, as well as choosing the best exposures for the dramatic colours.

Otherwise, I dunno? :D Have a look into ND grads etc, which should stop you needing to bracket...I think.

Gary.

 Very impressive set & subsequent PP work, Some of the B&W need a tad more PP in the dark areas to bring out a bit more detail

 Lovely stuff Gary, 1st and 6th work best for me in all versions.
I can't actually decide which of the processing techniques I like the most, because I think they all work well.

Thanks Erding, Should I have used "Dodging" to bring back shadow detail? Or should this be taken care of at PP stage? I have no experience really of Mono conversions.

Thanks Busby, glad you like.

Thanks for looking :D

No 6 for me , classic composition with an excellent sky, with just enough midtone/shadow detail to keep you absorbed.

Not too keen on the tinted versions, a bit over cooked for my eyes, although quite like the mono-versions.

BTW, its still advisable to bracket even using grads, it's not easy getting a balanced exposure first go. :)

Excellent series of shots there Gary! #24 is my fav, love the position of the boat, and the amazing sky! Nice work ;)

Wow, incredible skies there Gary. You've really used them to full effect
I think I actually prefer 'Style 2', but only just over 'Style 1'. I don't think the duotone versions really do justice to the fantastic colours and interest that you captured to be honest ............

An interesting exercise... If you'd posted the second set I'd have gone "ooo, very nice shots" and probably added some more blurb. But having seen the original shots, I have to say that for me these are by a long shot, much better than the purpley ones (sorry, the duotones don't come into it).

Maybe it's because blue is my favourite colour, but personally I say keep it natural! :)

Awesomeness. The black and white PP only works for a couple of the photos IMO.

The normal & the purple tinted ones are all awesome.

It's between either 3, 5 or 6 for me.

Any EXIF on them?

Thank you all, I will post the EXIF when I get home this evening.

Thanks all,

Gary.

The first thing that jumps out for me is that these all needed an ND grad. You can see that the beach itself is really quite dark because you've metered for the sky. ND grad to darken the sky and bring out more detail in the beach. As for the processing, I think you've posted too many photos to really decide upon. 27 is just too many. Too much scrolling. Pick your best photo, process it 3 times and then let us decide which style is best. It'll make you a better photographer to know which photos to post and which not. I'm finding the orange tinted ones aren't sitting right with me. They feel orange tinted more than sunsety.

nice pics but i HATE the borders lol. its so thick which makes me... yukkkk!

Thanks Pete, your input is valued. Pipa, glad you like the pics, sorry about the border :)

Also, agree an ND would be awesome, but none available for the 14 to 24. I have an idea about making one...
