Yes
Recently just bought a canon 17-55mm 2.8

Which now makes my 60mm macro only usable for macro as the 55mm can manage what I used te 60mm prime for.

So is it worth going for the 100mm canon macro, that way I get longer macro range and also a 100mm 2.8 which could come in handy.

I just love the little 60mm and don't want to make the wrong decision.

So keeps or swaps?

If you are not going to use the 60mm anymore then there is only one answer. The 100mm is supposed to be just as sharp anyway and as you've said at least it will get used.

To be fair, I think I answered my own question hahaha

I know I would be sad to see it go as it's give me most of my images

Remember at 100mm you will get less DOF to play with at similar magnifications

If the magnification is the same then the DoF will be the same (assuming the same aperture setting is used).....focal length doesn't enter into it.

so is that calculator wrong then as when I plug in the values being discussed the depth of field goes from 1.8 to 0.63?

EDIT - assuming f5.6 for eg.

What values are you "plugging" in?

I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that you are putting in the same subject distance for the two focal lengths (60 and 100mm). Having the same subject distance will result in different magnifications and hence different amounts of DoF. If you modify the subject distance to obtain the same magnification (as per the original statement) then the DoF should be the same and only the perspective will change.

sorry - understand you now.

No problem Chris. At the capture stage, DoF is a function of magnification and aperture size only.....focal length doesn't enter the equation. The Dofmaster chart will be computing the magnification based on the subject distance and focal length entered and then using the result along with the aperture and sensor size to obtain the DoF.

I was conventiently not thinking about the magnification aspect of the equation. I'll engage brain first next time.

Robbo have you thought about a siggy 150mm f2.8 macro sharper than a sharp thing with a equivalent FOV as a 240mm :). - both around the same price used .

Paul I haven't look at that no, only the tamron 90 and canon 100, will give it a look on google, cheers

The 100mm macro is a gem of a lens! Now you've got the 60mm focal length covered, I'd say definitely swap. I hear good things about the tamron 90mm and sigma 105, but I went for the canon as it has USM, and didn't extend when focussing (which came out in handy when you're getting up close and personal to small critters).

If I hadn't have gotten a 135 L, I'd never have sold it!

I had a tamron 90mm, cracking macro and a fantastic portrait lens to boot.
If I'd kept my pentax set up I would still have it, and it's on my list of wants for the canon.
