My sister doesn't understand why i spend a lot of time post processing my images, tweaking, sharpening etc, printing at home etc and having the satisfaction of being fairly competent of producing a half decent framed photograph.
Has anyone else been asked by their family why they don't take them to get them printed out at a high street retailer ?
I don't know what i should say to her in answer

Try to explain it by painting a picture she would recognize. For instance, based on work she does herself, or one of her hobbies - she probably has areas she wishes to be proficient in and use that proficiency to its fullest not just because she can but to learn something and/or have fun while doin so, even though it takes a lot more time than paying someone else to do it.

The same reason those playing in the world cup arent using a 3.99 football from soccer sports

I don't know how much the uhh, "supasnap" prints are, but would it be worth getting 1 print and showing her the quality difference?

They do say a picture is worth a thousand words!

That's a good idea Gemma, i'll do that to see the sharpening difference and what the saturation makes etc.

Ask her why she bothers spending 2+ hours tarting herself up to go out when all she needs to do is run a brush through her hair.

For proofs, I do very little PP and I do take the files to the high street (wherever's cheapest) to get 6x4s done. I then go through them and pick out the ones that may be worth spending time PPing and printing bigger. I then do the bigger prints at home, either on a Canon s820 or Canon iX4000.

i tried with my epson printer...the colours werent right and the framing came out lop sided

i have a costco card and found their work ok....and well priced

it all makes work for the working man...y'know

I have to wonder why this even matters to you?

Just do it the way you want. Why waste time and energy explaining something like this when that energy can be better applied somewhere else, like processing your images for instance?

I have personally found life so much more relaxing after I realised I didn't have to explain my actions to all and sundry.

Life is short, shorter if you explain things to people that don't understand :) (not saying she's dull or anything, just not understanding why we love photography, all of it..)

Aren't you kind of asking two different questions? The first regarding the processing of the photograph and the second being where you choose to print?

For me, the first is obvious, but only because I shoot in RAW, have a DSLR and know what needs to be done to a basic image. The second, to be honest, I'm not so sure on, at face value, since I don't print at home and don't know what equipment you use for that (I'll take your word for it that it's better, though!).

Some of the examples used are good, but if she's a girl, the football thing may be a bit of an own goal (!) as she can't relate - it's more a question of buying clothes from Asda as opposed to Next (for a reasonable comparison unless she shops at D&G) and to make the point about quality of cloth and cut.

However, in answer to your original question, just tell her it's because you enjoy what you do and take pride in it - I don't see what's wrong in that!

Wow, love all the female stereotyping going on here!

Aaaanyway, maybe he cares because it's his sister and he'd like her to understand his hobby? Crazy idea I know but I'm surely it must be remotely possible...

Not from me so much, I'm just drawing on the % or women who give truly give a c*** about football as opposed to the % of women who shop for 'fashion' clothes and even accounting for the cross over, I'd bet my example was fairly spot on.

He clearly does care and want her to care, but without a point of reference for someone who doesn't share the same interest, he needs a comparison she can relate to.

explain

macdonalds vs decent Italian restaurant

yes macdonalds is a cheap lunch, but unremarkable. a decent Italian restaurant will serve you a meal you wil remember

Take a photo of her and get it printed a super snaps, that should sort it out!

My sister? I'd just tell her it's what makes a good photo a great photo, then mention something about her putting makeup on as well...

Someone not in my immediate family I'd probably be a bit more tactful. :p
