Just a quick question..

AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)

Does this lens have an SWM - will it autofocus on a D40? I've tried googling, and it appears that only the Nikon fit has an in-built motor, but the canon fit etc don't? Could someone clear up my confusion please!

There are two models of this lens - one has an inbuilt focus motor, which you'll need for the D40, the other doesn't...

  • Diameter x Length ø73mmx 92mm

Great, thanks very much for the info. Is there a denotation on Tamron lenses for internal AF motors.. like 'AF-S'/'HSM'?

Not that I've found (yet;)) I'm afraid. Best bet would be to contact wherever you are buying it from in person to confirm they have the right model...
