Hi Folks,

Looking to upgrade my std zoom to a fast lens, can't afford (or justify) the Nikon so have been looking at third party lenses. Having spent a bit of time looking about I think :thinking: that the Tamron 28-75 is the best option for me but would love to here from people that use this combo and poss see some pictures that I may have missed :thumbs:.

I am looking at getting it from OSD so would be the newest version of the lens.

Hi Nick,

I have the D300/Tamron 28-75 combination and this lens is my favourite - I use it for portraits, weddings and some indoor sports. It's one of the older versions but is beautifully sharp although I did have to try out two others that were a bit soft at wide open before I settled on this one.

A few months ago it developed a focussing problem in that it became a bit hit-and-miss. I eventually sent it off for calibration and they found that one of the internal lens elements had come loose. It's now even better than it was before and I only mention the issue in passing really.

I'll add some pictures later when I get home but feel free to ask any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them :)
 
Thanks for that steve.

How do you find it wide open? From what I have read it seems that the newer version with the motor doesn't seem to affect the focus speed but how do you find the focus on the D300.

Heres one I took with that very combination. F2.8 at 28mm.

I've got this one a D200, it really is a great lens. It is sharp, built well and feels good in the hand.

My only problem with it on a crop is it just isn't quite wide enough for my use. That said, you adapt and I've had some lovely shots out of it.

Mine is older model with no built in motor and is very very sharp from f/3.2.

Totally usable at f/2.8, but there is a big shift when stopped down one.

Thanks for that. I have looked at most of my shots with my current lens (18-70) and they are mostly at the longer end so the focal range should suit me fine. I always have the option at looking for a WA to cover the short end if I need it.

Good to hear about the sharpness - as long as it is sharp enough wide open then that is fine but I am looking for decent sharpness from a stop down :thumbs:
 
Thanks very much for that - looks good to me. Just looking for a s/h one or the best deal (currently OSD at £275 delivered) oh and to convince the OH to let me spend the money!!

I'm looking to trade mine in for something wider as it happens - specifically a 17-50 f/2.8.

You're not coincidentally trying to shift one?

I wanted the Tamron but I got the sigma 24-70mm f/2.8- this was really sharp throughout the range from 24-70. I did have a tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and found at 50mm the edges were very blurry f/2.8. this was the non VC model.
 
Well I have gone for it and it is fantastic. Lovely colour rendition and sharp throughout so well chuffed.

Not the best but not had much chance to use it yet but here is one from it.

It takes a bit of getting used to but is well worth the effort :)
 
It's the law of diminishing returns. The Nikon one might be 10% better but you pay 300% more for it. Looking at Allan's picture it shows just how good this "cheaper option" actually is. I got the genuine Nikon one but I got a bonus that month so splashed out. I had considered the Tamron and the Sigma.

I am sure you will be chuffed to bits with the Tamron.
