I have just been reading that its not actually a macro lens, is this true?

Yes it will only go 1:2 or 1/2 life size where as a true macro lens will give you 1:1 - You will only get true macro from a prime lens

The canon 55-250 IS is probably a better bet. Supposed to have decent optics and image stabilisation (which really does come in useful at longer focal lengths).

Add a raynox DCR-250 to the front, and you should achieve 1:1 or near.


By the way, both of those ruler images are perfectly sharp, they are just focussed on different places.

it is on the leading edge but you have a very shallow DOF with macro so the curvature of the tape takes it out of the focus plane. - You'll also need a hot-shoe flash to get the best from any macro lens.


Have a look at a raynox DCR

I have one, I love it, but I am thinking of adding the raynox to it as well, it is really versatile if you only want to have one lens.
