Tamron 70-300mm Lens

Been looking at getting a nice long zoom and I noticed this in Jessops when I was looking at the Nikon lenses.

Is it any good? Worth spend £100 on? I know I'll probably get a responce of "you get what you pay for" but is it actually any good for a "starter" lens?

Depends on which Tamron. The Tam LD 70-300 is not worth buying. The Tam LD Di is a decent lens if you can get it for a good price, or the Sigma 70-300 APO would be another option (the APO and LD Di are pretty much as good as each other, just get the one that has the best price). Neither are exceptional but they're both the cheapest decent starter kit for that zoom range.

I bought the 70-300 DI Tamron & have used it as my main lens for loads of stuff with pretty decent results ( for a novice that is !)

Take a look at my flickr link for shots of bike racing using this lens . Does get a little soft at 300mm but I've not noticed any fringing, purple or otherwise ?

Just checked my Flickr stuff , all the shots on there are taken with this lens on my D80 . Maybe not the best shots ever but I'm a newbie to this lark
As a starter lens I'd say great buy :thumbs:

Thanks for the feedback guys! I assume because it says "Focus system: Auto/ Manual (built-in motor)" it WILL autofocus with my D40?

Great pics Lynne. I can't fault them! Just spent a few days in Cardiff and having used my 55-200 and found I wanted more of a zoom, thought I'd look in Jessops at what the options were and noticed it.

Might have to pop into my local Jessops and take a proper look at it!
 
If its built in motor then it will work with your D40, not a bad lens for the money, I've got one and am in no hurry to replace it.
 
I was looking to try out this range and bought the 70-300 Tamron on a £99 deal (the importer is offering a 5 year warranty on these as well). Now I have no knowledge of the IQ as it never got mounted on the camera as I just didn't like the build quality, especially the plastic mount, so sent it back the same day.

I have mixed views about this lens, having owned it for nearly a year and a half. The build quality is not great, but it is very light. I think my copy back focusses (well, that is my excuse), and is soft wide open, and at the long end. It also hunts badly in any low light situation, or long range when it is confused by similar colours.
You may be better off, saving up a couple of hundred quid for a decent long zoom, which is sharper at the long end.
