Tamron, Sigma or Nikkor 70-300 IS

This has probably been asked before but i am struggling finding anything with the search function

Bascially i'm after people views on which of the above is the best buy in terms of sharpness as i am a little disappointed in the Tamron 70-300 (non IS) len i currently have as it seems a tad soft at the long end

I only bought my current Tamron (AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD) as i had nothing above 50mm abd wanted to see if i would make use of it, well it seems i have made use of it (wildlife, zoo's planes) but it is soft at the long end at infinity focus, it was bought new and recently sent off to Tamron to see if there was anything wrong with it, they sent it back giving it the all clear, so i have put it down to being a cheap lens (£100)

I have read that the Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD is a much sharper lens, but my experience with the cheap 70-300 has left a sour taste in my mouth, so was wanting some real world experiences of what alternatives there are around the £300 price mark
 
The Tamron 70-300 vc version is a totally different beast altogether, for the money the best of the bunch,very sharp and the Vc is very good,also has full time manual focus which is useful, I still have the cheap one as well but it's not worth selling.

Cheers for the clarification, did you find the cheap 70-300 soft as well?
 
i have a tamron 70-300 VC USD for my Canon and it is much sharper at the long end than my older canon 75-300 (their most basic tele zoom lens). here are my thoughts on the tamron:

the build quality is good (i dont have experience with pro grade lenses like the L series, but the barrel that extends doesnt wobble and the lens certainly doesnt feel cheap/plastic-y)
personally i dont use the full time manual very much but it is handy when i needed it.
the zoom ring is nice and wide.
comes with a hood which makes the lens look at least twice as badass :p
the VC is incredible, almost too good because it "sticks" a little bit when panning/composing

much better bang for the buck compared to its canon counter part, so i would imagine it is similar with your nikons. i would recommend at least taking a look at it even if Tamron left you sour last time :thumbs:

I'm going to swing by our local camera shop tonight (Harrisons in Sheffield), but it seems most places only sell one or the other (Tamron or Sigma) as i was hoping to do a back to back comparison
 
Ta, i'll see if Harrisons will offer me anything on a trade in
