Tascam x8

Is the Tascam X8 ideal for recording nature sounds? What is the self noise like and is it comparable to the zoom F6?

I have had a Zoom F6 and found it very quiet, I also liked the fact you could run it on AA and NPF batteries. I sold it and brought a Mixpre 3ii because I found the build quality a bit flimsy and it was all a bit too small and fiddley to use.

I would have thought the X8 form factor would be a bit better for external use and it's much cheaper. There is a good review of the X8 here

I’ve done a bit of recording of seabirds puffins and Manx shearwaters etc
I’ve got an older model Tascam and had best results using an external plug in mic

Have a look at the Azden SMX-30v stereo/ directional microphone I have just ordered one for myself
