Teleconverter Advice?

Hi all again! Merry Christmas to all!!

I have been looking at teleconverters for my Canon 550d and 70-300 IS USM lens but I'm not sure about the type to get or to even bother? I have looked at the Sigma ones but I'm not sure if they support the canon lens? Wouls I be better going for the Canon converter instead? I am not sure they only support the full frame camera's and lenses?

Teleconvertors are designed for constant aperture lenses, ideally f/2.8 and some constant f/4 lenses.

As per Peters post, you'd lose AF with that lens at the very least.
 
I use my Kenko 1.4x With all my zooms with no problems. There is a way of fooling the camera to autofocus with my big zooms in good light but in poor light you'd have to manual focus.
I've been using it since the days of my 350d with no problems.
As for loss of image quality it's nothing that a tad more sharpening wont cure.
Recently I've got a 70-200 f2.8 and a 2x canon tele con and that works well too with no noticeable loss of iq.
 
Sorry to hijack, could I use one on my 1dmiii and 100-400l with any probs ?

You can, but beware that the with a 1.4x converter, the lens's max aperture is now only f8, and you might only get autofocus with the central focussing point.

The Canon converter is not compatable with that lens; it's basically only compatable with L telephotos and L tele zooms
 
I've just bought a Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4x as I had a look at the compatability list on their website and most of my lenses fitted. I've had it on my 7D and 5D2 with my 100-400 and it does still autofocus without any trouble in good light and fairly well in low light, and thats without having to tape any of the contacts either, Highly recommended.
 
I've a Kenko 2x of some description which will usually autofocus with my 70-200 f4 (not in bad light, obviously) - and the 70-300 is usm is a good lens - so I would hope you'd get away with a 1.4x converter without too many focus or quality issues. AFAIK teleconverters do work with the 70-300 is usm.

I think the Canon 550D is the Rebel and according to the Kenko compatibility chart the 1.4x teleconverter will work okay. The 2.0x teleconverter may give you focusing problems.
 
I have a Kenko Pro300 1.4x that is reputed to be the best of the generics. I don't know what sample variation is like but mine is very good. I'd say it's well worth a punt.

There is a lot of variation as to how well the Kenko will work - on my 100-400 and 7D it will not AF and also sends the IS a bit wiggy. One way that the OP might be able to get AF with a 1.4x is using live view.
 
I use the kenko 1.4 with 100-400mm. The biggest issue for me is F8, when you take into account our lovely British weather. The images are very soft but then as previously mentioned the 100-400 is rather soft at 400mm and the teleconverter will only make that worse. All works fine on the 1d mark iii for me and for a cheap 560mm lens it cant be all bad, just dont expect miracles!
