Teleconverter compatibility?

A bit of a stupid question but would a sigma 70-300 F4:5.6 DG APO lens be compatible with a canon 2x teleconverter on a 400D?

I'm not sure if the tc is compatible with the camera or the lens.

No such thing as a stupid question :)

The TC is compatible with the camera but not the lens.

The Canon made teleconverters have a protruding front element and it is generally only the more expensive lenses that have a recess to accommodate this.
 
If you look on sigma's website, they have lists of lenses that are compatible with their own 1.4 and 2x TCs.

Worth looking at Kenko TCs as well, but, and I may stand corrected, Canons own TCs only work with L lenses without extender tubes?
 
Would any tc (sigma?) work with that lens or would they all have the same problem?
 
They wouldn't have the same problem as they should all fit (iirc) but not all will retain AF function.

The table on their site shows you which lenses work with which and what, if any, functionality you would lose.
 
Most TC's will work but you will lose AF on that lens at about 135mm. There will also be 2 stops loss of light and an effect on image quality. You will also find that it will be very hard to hand hold the camera to take a steady shot.

If, after all that, you still want one have a look at this search on ebay (all except the Hoya will work)
