Teleconvertor Confusion

Looking to purchase a Kenko Teleconvertor shortly , but confused with different reviews on which is best, the Kenko Teleplus DG Pro 300 1.4X or the Kenko TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4X DGX whats the difference, also any idea what the significance is of the colored dots?.

I was under the impression the mc4 was the cheaper budget model.

That was certainly the case when I was buying my 300 pro.

The dots just tell you where to line up on the body and lens.

The best IMO and latest is the Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x. It gives very good compatability with lenses and you hardly lose any IQ or AF speed. It's designed to report the correct aperture and focal length in the exif of the photo and you don't have to tape up any contacts to use it.

The MC4 1.4x and the MC7 2x are the first ones they made and there is a big quality difference in them. I had a MC4 and compared to the Pro300 DGX it's slow focussing and the IQ takes quite a hit.

Not sure if the Pro300 or the DGX came out first but they were both updates to the MC4 and the DGX was IIRC the first one to report the correct exif. You should be able to get the Pro300 DGX 1.4x for between £100-120 depending where you look and believe me, it's worth paying for it rather than getting a cheaper one first. I have a Pro300 DGX 1.4x myself and I've used it on around 5 or 6 of my lenses and the effect has been fantastic.
