Telephoto buying advice.

Hi guys

I need some help deciding on a telephoto for my Canon 450d.

Currently I only have the 18-55 kit lens although I can borrow an EF 50mm f1.4 and an EF 35-135.

I need more range and I'm on a tight budget. Would you recommend an EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS or a Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III USM (no IS)?

Obviously the EF lens gives me more range but the EF-S has IS which I understand is quite important on telephoto lenses when not using a tripod.

Are there any other lenses that I should be considering?

I'm also considering the Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 USM IS (I think it might be the 1st gen) - as I've found it within budget 2nd hand.

Any views on this lens?
 
Thanks, Not used that lens so cant comment. For your info the 55-250 goes for between £100-£140 on here in the for sale section. Its also regarded as a very popular efs zoom lens on here hence why i bought one:thumbs:.

Hi chiffs - thanks for linking to the sample photos.

The lens does seem like it can be soft at the long end but there are some cracking shots nonetheless.

I have some thinking to do!

I've also found a review here of another lens that is in budget http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx - the EF 70-300. Its on the expensive side for me... but might be worth it?

I'm leaning towards an EF lens purely as I'll be able to lend it to my Dad who has a 5Dmk2 - this way I won't feel so guilty about borrowing his lenses :)
 
Hiya - I'm assuming s/h prices already unfortunately.

Yes, I'd love some L glass but it isn't going to happen this time.

I'm still fairly new to photography and I think I want the extra reach that a 300mm is going to give me.

If I find that I really don't use the lens over 200mm then I can get a 70-200L next time :)
