Telephoto Extenders

I'm looking at extenders to use with a telephoto lens; the only issue is that as well as a limited budget (secondary consideration) I also want to be able to take my kit with me when cycling (some places are much easier to get to when cycling than driving and/or on foot, but too much kit carries a weight penalty) and get as much from as few bits as possible.

Apart from the issues involved in going cycling with an SLR (It's well stashed to protect against impacts) my main thought is "how can I get good tele/telemacro pictures?"). I want to be able to lengthen my lens easily; I have a couple of shorteners that save carrying an extra lens each but I am having trouble getting good extenders. Are good quality front-end (filter attachment) or rear-end (between lens and camera) extenders better? Or is a combination of both advisable?

Seconded.
Personally if you're using a DSLR I wouldn't even consider the screw in teleconvertors though, they're 'ok' on some cheaper pseudo SLRs

Kenko converters get a good write up for a budget buy but it depends on your system / lenses

The thing is how long do you want to go and what lenses do you have already, many consumer 70-300 and similar don't all accept TC's due to there construction. A Canon L 70-200 may do so though with a 2X TC you will take a 2 stop hit so f2.8 becomes f5.6 that's apart from the degradation of IQ. If weight and focal range is your requirement then the Canon 100-400 is about your best bet, not cheap though.
