Telephoto lens for D700

Can anyone recommend a reasonable fast fixed focal length lens around the 400 - 500mm mark to share between my D700 & Fuji S5 ... cant afford Nikon so would have to be third party make .. also not wishing to spend much above £600 mark if possible ..

No such thing, I'm afraid. The only new primes you can get in that focal length range are:
* Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR = £6500
* Nikon 500mm f/4 VR = £6000
* Sigma 500mm f/4.5 = £3500

You might be able to pick up an old manual-focus lens second hand, but it still won't be cheap. For example here is an old Nikon 600mm f/4 in none-too-great condition, and it's still more than £1000.

the only cheapish way to get up to 400mm would be something like a nikkor 300mm F/4 AF-s and a 1.4X teleconverter which would get you to 420mm, still over a grand new though and like rocking horse poop secondhand
