Reviews online are mixed on this lens, but I've been thinking of swapping the 35mm F1.4 for one to have something a bit wider for my hols in New York and Canada later this year. Keep reading reviews of how terribly soft it is, even at mid range apertures. Would love to hear from people of TP who use it regularly.

Thank you.

I think you need to be aware that there are two versions of this lens, MkI and MkII. I have the MkII and it's certainly not soft but I can't help you with the MkI as I've never owned one.

I've had a couple of mark I lenses and both were sharp wide open, but in the centre, the edges were soft. That never really bothered me.

Ah yes, should have been more clear, it's the MkII I'd be looking at. :-)

Thanks. Any more thoughts on the 16-35 version II? With some sample images if anyone fancies it. :)

same question here.. thinking about the mkII myself.. I ahve the 35mm f2 and a 24mm f2.8 but need something as good but more versatile... the 35f2 is absoloutly stunning .. How does the 16-35 mkII compare?

Just to be annoying, I was reading on (I think) Canon rumours, last week, that this lens may well be up for a new version.

{edit} found it http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/08/new-wide-angle-zoom-discussion-opinion/

I'm actually looking at this lens for my 60D, but may upgrade to a 5Dmk3 first, depending on if anything other than sheer rumour surfaces about this lens. If a new version pops up, you can be sure the price will leap as has been the case with the 24-70mkI.

Things like this make me sad :( Always ifs and buts with these things!

As for the quality of the lens, I haven't actually read anything bad about it, and all images I've seen on places like flickr, and the other sites that pop up on google seem to be very good :)

Thanks for that. Well I've gone for the 16-35 II now the 35mm has sold. Don't really want to wait and the new lens, as you say, will probably be far too expensive anyway. :(

I might be popping along to another gig on the 15th, and the decision is now whether to get the lens or the camera. Having major issues making my mind up. I even briefly considered getting a loan to get a 1DX. I'm my own worst enemy :D
