Testing a lenses quality!!

Hi I've just been a away for weekend as my step daughter was in an international dance comp, so I took along my camera with tamron 17-50vc with me, I've not managed to upload them yet but looking at the pictures I've got on the camera I'm not sure the iq is very good!!
Just wandering if there is a good test I can do to check the lens! I assume it would incorporate a tripod which I have!
I'm concerned as I bought this lens second hand
And have read a fair bit on hear of bad copy's!!
 
What's wrong with them? What was the light like? What aperture and shutter speed were you using? What camera body and what ISO? Did you have VC on for moving subjects?
 
Ok I have a canon 450d, vc on, av priority at 2.8, iso at 400, I was a fair way away with the intentions of cropping them but I think they look a bit soft when zoomed in on camera!
May be I should of just waited till I got them on computer!!
I'm fairly new to learning all the controls, thought av priority was the best option for the conditions which was a lit sports hall!!
 
I'd hazard a guess that your shutter speed was left a little low - and some lenses do not perform at their best when the aperture is wide open, also the depth of field is at it's minimum with it wide open (though if you were far away this point is probably moot).
 
Right ok, when I've managed to get my laptop back off my daughter I'll take a look!! And maybe post a couple!! If I have the courage!!!
 
As above. You're asking a lot of that lens under those conditions.

Ok, may be I should of taken my canon 55-250!! Just thought the f2.8 was the better choice!
Possibly neither would of been much cop!! If this is the case what would be a good lens for these conditions!!
 
mjb123, I agree, as others have said you are most likely expecting a bit much from the camera and lens in those conditions.

You can test your lens by taking a photo outside in good light of say a building wall, or a brick wall. Use ISO100 and f.8 or f.9 for your Tamron lens. If you use a tripod turn the VC off.

Once you've downloaded the photo onto your laptop crop it 100%, you should be able to tell from that if it's focusing as it should. It most likely won't be as crisp once cropped 100%, but you should still be able to tell if it's in focus or not.

I think you are defo right the pictures were a bit blurred from the speed they were dancing! Should of stuck to auto!!
