Just out of interest I have taken a 105mm test shot with two different lenses. One is a Nikon 105mm F2.8 Macro the other is with the 70-200 F2.8 VR1

You must not peak at the data to find out the lens!

What one do you think is sharper, and has better colours? One thing I have noticed is that they seem to be composed differently but this was tripod mounted and the only movement would have been a fraction of a mm as I changed lenses so not sure what caused that either! :cuckoo:

The first is sharper, better IQ. Looks at the teeth on the orange thing.

That is normal for lenses when focusing on close objects, due to the design of the lens, most focal lengths are measured at infinity, not 8 foot

Uncle Ken explains it HERE

Agreed top looks the higer IQ image!

You changed lenses and took the second photo within 15 seconds, not bad!! :)

Top one looks better to me also: sharper and more contrasty - although the other shot is warmer...
Another thing to remember is that 105mm marked on a zoom might not give you exactly the same AOV as on a prime 105...

The top one look sharper, especially the stitching on the photo frame.

the top one will always look sharper as it's less magnification, you can tell by the DOF on the mouse

without using radar i vote for the prime 105

Yep I'm with you!

Now that's a great read and goes to show we are always learning! Big  for that one.

I'm used to fast changes, I need to get faster as the BTCC is about to get underway and I need to swap 24-70 for 70-200 really fast. Or buy that D3s  for my 24-70 and save myself time

Cheers and noted :)

Yep that's the 105 Macro showing that the prime will always be that, PRIME

Yeah I've learned more about the differing focal lengths across different lens thanks to uncle Ken!

without using radar i vote for the prime 105

So that would be No1 all day! Cheers all this really helps me confirm my choices of more primes going forward!
