GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Usable on the following platforms, and completely free.

Linux, Unix, Windows, and the Mac.

errr mines already 2.2.13 and i havent updated is a while

The latest is 2.3.11 as far as I can see. 2.2.13 was released in August.
But if you go to the downloads page, it shows 2.2.13 as the latest, which is only a developmental release.

So 2.2.13 is the latest stable version, it's just been out since August.

That said, I've never used it, is it any good?

2.3.11 is dev release before 2.4

2.3.13 is definately older than august

It is a great tool especially as it is free. Most shop users dont like it because all the butttons etc are in the wrong place but its fine for me compared like winblows and linux (which i use )
Its worth trying as its free anyway. Also way better than running a dodgy copy of shop which i think loads must do as i certainly wouldnt pay the price for it when others are nearly as good and free. Just one downside to it really, 8bit.
Cinepaint on the otherhand is 16bit for when you actually need it .

I have used it before, and the tools are basically the same as PS tools.
One or two things may look slightly different, but the same results can be achieved by using this instead of PS.
