Just seen a fb post that Bass & Bligh in Harrogate was broken into the other night..

Looking at the other picture on their facebook page the thieves cut through the roller shutter door with a stihl saw and then smashed a big hole in the window.

How to recover your equipment

Simple tip make sure you have your name and phone number in the camera memory under copyright information.
If its is recovered you can easy prove to the police its yours.

Super Tip
In the vertical grip of my D800 I have a tracker . looks like a battery about the size of a matchbox. If I phone it on my smartphone I get a map on google with the street and house number where it is ..Cost £29 ..ok put it in your camera box or whatever..if you are quick it gives you a chance to find your gear.

That sounds good, I have read a little, so what about running costs later, are there any?

Anybody have insurance :) Im finding that while at home there isn't any problems, new for old and accidental cover for full price. However while out and about each item only £500 ,im thinking they wouldn't count a lens as part of the camera if it was bought separately?, but not looked around for anything better from well known companies

www.immobilise.com been using it many years, also use marker pen, but like the tracker idea, already have that on cell phone

All my camera gear is covered on our household contents insurance. The more expensive items are specified separately but all are covered away from the home. We're with Direct Line.

Regarding camera gear if travelling abroad using a hire car... as a close mate of mine learnt from recent experience in Athens March 2017 -

1. Have specific photography insurance in place covering all items - this is a must!
2. In tourist areas take note of the people around you and try not to be on your own. Not everyone will be a tourist!
3. Keep all gear in arms reach and in sight. For example don't leave unattended anywhere, even in the boot of a car. If it is left in the boot which is concealed - its very simple to force the drivers lock open on most cars, thus allowing boot to be accessed.
4. Park in designated car parks and try to be in a secure area. Street parking is not advised.
A few simple rules to follow. I'm sure many people can add to this...

Kind regards,
Chris

I follow none of these bar maybe rule 4 - my view is to head to low risk areas - non touristy mountainous places to be exact. The risk of crime in a car park in the Ordesa Valley or in Gavarnie is very low risk - whereas on a street in Rome in might be a lot lot higher. I tend to sleep in the car so a douvet etc covers the bags that are strapped into the seats - but it looks like a bomb site - messy cars aren't robbers dreams.

I also tend to leave some gear behind in a hotel/B&B before heading out so even if the car is robbed-not everything is gone. I used to have the insurance but the price of the policies over the last half decade is well into four figures and as such I could afford to replace anything lost/broken/stolen. My travel insurance allows a claim for stolen gear but upto £2000 only.

Stolen Nikon D750. I have sent the following to every major second hand camera dealer I can think of, and local second hand shops in the Bromley, Kent area. It’s self explanatory, I even contacted PayPal before I sent the camera and they confirmed an email starting with my Christian name was from them. Wish me luck:(:(. The advert was on gumtree.

Dear Sirs/ madam,
I have had a Nikon D750 Camera serial number 6121422 stolen in a PayPal scam. I sent it to an address in Orpington, Kent, to a Mr J Fowden.
If someone tries to trade this camera with you I would appreciate if you could contact myself or the Metroploitan Police. This camera has a shutter count of 5762. I had an email from PayPal saying the person had paid for it and funds would be released when I sent the tracking number. Unfortunately this has not happened, and after contacting PayPal it seems I have been scammed.
Regards Andrew Wright

Met police ref number 3310276/19

Sorry to hear that Andrew ... if you have made any contact with 'Paypal' from an email link rather than directly from the genuine website, I suggest you quickly change your password. :)

- If your gear is that expensive would it be possible to place a tracker inside the kitbag? I doubt thieves would discard the bag, it keeps the goods safe from bumps.

- Whilst l would disagree with SFTP that there are any "safe" settings (try walking around town with an obviously laden camera bag, the stare l got from one passing young man was pretty darn telepathic, he was obviously a general dirtbag that seizes the day; l returned a look to signal that l was ready, besides it was a busy main road, so nothing happened)

.... any place where the passions take over are a clear no-no: casinos, pubs, clubs, festivals
(unless you have a friend to keep a watchful gaze)

Not quite so sure. 5/6 years ago I found a "discarded" camera bag down at Teifi marshes. Couldn't find the owner. The bag was clean and in very nice condition, though a bit damp. There was absolutely nothing in it - not even a lens cleaning cloth! A mint (ish) Tamrac pack discarded - I wonder why?
