Theater Photography

Hi Dangleman, I was asked by a friend who is a member of this musical company to shoot this mainly because their regular guy is on holiday, the Director did say at the end that he expect me to return as my photos are better than the other guy lol. So I guess it's who you know more than what you know.

Bit tough on the guy who went on holiday?

What's the best way to approach 'the theatres'? (Apologies but haven't read through the whole thread yet :) )

I dont know know if you meant something else.. But you dont contact the theaters .. Its the people making the play not the host that you want .... Search for theatre groups in your area... check the website and see if they have a gallery... if they havent then they will probably welcome you with open arms.. but beware small local theatre companies dont have two pennies to rub together..

LOL, i only did it as a favour, and I don't really know how good he is. It was either me or no pictures and this turned out (my lucky day) that this was the Company's biggest production to date.
Plus, it was my first time, it could've totally bombed lol

Of course, i won't push myself for the next play unless I get asked. I don't plan to do this for living (and it doesn't pay enough for the time involve for a start), I did it partly as a favour and partly I want an insight into threatre photography.

Really nice shots there Raymondo. I'm thinking of touting for this type of work, though I haven't done it yet (I mainly do corporate and editorial, but want to branch out).

Pictures are commissioned by the production companies not the theatres - so that's who you need to find/speak to.

A great read and well done on the shots. Thanks for posting.

(and AWP) - thanks guys. I would have just contacted the actual theatres, so good point.

I did my first night at BOOGIE NIGHTS last night... they rehearse in full dress but lighting hasnt been done yet so its just house lights... The stage is being converted to seats and the play is on the floor at front of stage on a lit up disco dancefloor.. 200 flashing coloured squares.. So the audience will be at both front and back

So under house lights the big dance numbers just couldnt be done :( Thur and Fri for that.. I got some smaller scene pics that i will post later... This is probably going to be the biggest production I ahve photographed :)

Sounds tricky. Good luck fella!

The pics under house lights without big dance scenes are on my website

Pics arn't just the play... all the production company... doing whatever they do.. director sat above at back... even the joiner is in there...lighting crew on ladders ect

Your DR pics look good Kipax - BTW - these are working lights rather than 'house lights' - house lights are what light the auditorium. Look forward to seeing the show lit.

A very interesting read, thanks for the hints and tips. I've been asked to shoot the next local AmDram company production (the director is a friend). I'm not sure a 450d will cut it, as the max ISO is 1600, but I'm willing to give it a try. As she pointed out, they don't get any shots at the moment (excepting those that the cast and crew remember to occasionally on their P&S), so anything is better than they currently get ;)

The venerable Strand 520i, a desk I am very fond of!

Some nice shots!
