that screw into a standard lens.. the little +1, +2, +4, +10 kits.

Need some advice please.

Was thinking of having a dabble with macro shooting, but not wanting to dive in to buying an expensive lens at this stage.

Now reading reviews of these cheap kits (available on EBay for 10-20 quid) the general opinion seems to be they are a bit better on lower diameter lens.

So as I dont use my 18-55 kit lens much I was toying with trying these out on that rather than my usual walkabout 28-135 72mm.

Anyone have experience of this set up or similar they can share?

Excuse my ignorance, but whats the difference between this Raynox gadget and the +1, +2, +4, +10 kits then?
 
I've got pretty much the same setup as you described - 18-55 kit and a wallet of those add-on "lens in a filter body" things. They're fine for trying closeup work out, though there is a bit of distortion with the extra glass, compounded if you put more than one lens on at once. I'd imagine that the concerns of keeping them to smaller diameter lens is a valid one - the bigger the lens the more chances for the (obviously cheap) glass to have variations in it. For my money, the +10 was just a bit too distorting, and I swapped to a cheap manual set of extension tubes and an old Yashica 50mm lens with a C/Y to EOS converter ring.
 
Has anyone got a link for one of these kits. Was only thinking about this sort if thing yesturday lol how strange :D
 
My experience is limited, having recently purchased a set of 1-2-4-10x close-up lenses, for my G1/14-52mm with a 52mm filter. I also purchased a set for my Nikon D5000/17-70mm and 67mm filter.

I found the 67mm not so good and the 10x on both to be very prone to blue fringing. I also tried them with a 45-200mm on the G1, hard work!!! Stick with the 14-45.

I have also decided to stay with tubes and an f1.8 50mm Nikon prime with the D5000.

Conclusion . . . horses for courses?

I have a set, I bought them for my old olympus p+s to have a play with 52mm which is great as they also fit on my 50m f1.8. They do increase magnification but quality does drop and focusing is difficult, you also have a problem getting musch more than thr center spot in focus.
 
I bought a cheapo Camray set off eBay. They're not bad for a dabble, but add a fair amount of chromatic aberration [easily reduced though].

I have a set, this was taken with a G1/14-45-@45mmfl, + x4 lens, minimum PP or cropping:
Bedding Marigold, head size about the same as a 50p
