Think my next lens will be Sigma 30mm 1.4...

So I have the Sigma 85mm 1.4 and I think that I will probably get the 30mm next.Now is this all the lenses that I really need for portrait shoots?All on a cropped sensor for now until I can afford ff.

I also have the Minolta 70-210mm (beercan) for shots as well.

Personally I find a 50mm to be the most useful portrait lens on APS-C, but I'm sure many will disagree with me. If I owned just the 85mm I would probably go for something around 30mm next so I think that's a good option for you.

Remember that if you go FF the Sigma 30mm is designed for crop. It's a fantastic do-it-all lens and good for full length shots of people, not so good for head shots but you have the 85mm for that.

I'd agree and say that a 50mm lens on crop would be more suitable for portraits. On the 5dii the 85mm is better for portraits and 50mm is a good walkaround lens. On a crop, 50mm is best for portraits.

Well I have been debating between the 30mm & 50mm lenses.Might be worth me going and trying them both out on the camera and see which one suits me best....or buy both.

Both if you can but I find that the 50mm one the 1.6crop is too close most of the time. 30 sigma I've tried (had focussing problems) was excellent (except for the focusing problems).

Get the 30mm f1.4 and enjoy - probably complements your 85mm

I have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and I absolutely love it. I also want the 50mm and 85mm to go with it. I have a crop body and a FF body but as it isn't FF compatible it's only ever used on the crop body.

If you are looking for a lens that you want to keep for a long time then consider how soon you might be going FF. If you are going FF soon then go for the 50mm. Just as good a lens as the 30mm and very similar FoV as the 30mm on the crop.

I have the Siggy 50 and 85mm's and they're good lenses, the 85mm possibly being a little better than the 50mm. I had a 30mm but sold it recently after buying a full frame camera.

f1.4 takes some getting used to and you do need to be careful but once mastered all of these f1.4 lenses are very, very good IMVHO. The 30mm is a very compact lens and I wish that the 85mm could be the same size and weight

give the sony 35mm 1.8 a try. cheap lens, quite sharp wide open and a pleasure to use on a crop as a walkabout
