Thinking about a Tamron 70-300mm VC for my first lens, is it a good choice?

Thinking of adding to my first kit, all I have at the moment is the kit lens, looking to get some wildlife shots going and have been looking at some of the cheaper tele's, I really like the look of the Tamron 70-300mm VC, is it a good choice for under £300, or are there any better alternatives/cheaper?

I have a birthday coming and fathers day, so should be able to get upto the Tamrons price range, I hope:)
 
Yes, one of the best, the VC is superior to nikon & canon's equivalents ( I could hand hold mine down to 1/13th second at 300mm an still get a sharp image) sharp enough to shoot wide open too.

Both examples shot wide open @ f5.6

Yep, it will be urban wildlife really, small birds in the garden and such stuff as days out to wildlife centers.

I have looked at the 55-300 VR and there seems to be a lot of bad press for it, also the 55-200VR but I think that will be too short on range, also the 70-300VR I have looked at reviews and that seems to get a lot of bad press compared to the tamron.


That's a great shot above and lovely detail in it.
 
I had the Nikon 55-200 and now have upgraded to a Tamron 70-300

There's no comparison the Tamron is far superior in every way

That's good to hear, worth the outlay then?, it seems to be a little gem from all I have heard or read or watched, (I spend way too much time looking into stuff).
