Thinking of selling my D3000 - or?

Hello, I'm new :)

After a lot of umming and arrrrrhing about possibly upgrading my year old D3000, I made the plunge yesterday. For a while I've been lusting over the D7000because I am starting to feel the limitations of my d3000, though It's a good friend to me. Anyway, jessops refused me finance but I was able to buy the d7000 on finance from clifton cameras and so far, so good - it should arrive soon hopefully.

So, the question being - to sell my d3000? Or keep it as a backup body or if for some unknown reason I dont like the d7000. I want to keep the kit lens from my d3000 because the only other lens I have is the 35mm 1.8 which I ADORE but its a prime, and at the moment I cant afford to buy a better lens than the 18-55. I have a 200 pound limit you see at the moment.

If I was to sell my d3000 body, it would mean a bit of extra cash and I could maybe pay off some finance earlier. Or....buy a film camera which has been on my mind for a while, because I'd really like to have a go at that...I like the sound of the k1000 and the fm2. It would help that I guess...

What do you guys think? How much do you rekon a d3000 body goes for? Its in brill condition but my first camera (present) and I'm a little attached to it!
 
You might want to get this moved to 'price checks' maybe, but I moved mine on for ~120 a while back I seem to remember. Maybe get 150? Must admit, I couldnt be bothered looking around when I was shifting mine. I hear the 3100 goes for not much over 300 these days brand new (?). I'd sell it tbh rather than a backup body.:cool:

What do you not like about the 18-55 - the range or the aperture (or build quality)? It's actually quite a nice little lens you know, and I feel often underated :(

What sort of photos are you into and what conditions normally?

I dont think that you 'wont like' the D7000 :)

Would film not get a bit pricey maybe if you are on a budget? (Development costs/film price etc?) With my amount of 'bin rate' it wouldnt suit me financially:lol: Could see it being very interesting though and almost addictive.

I'll have a look around ebay and see what they go for. Ideally I would want 200 for it, though I know thats asking a lot. I would take 175? But I'm in no rush to sell it so I would rather wait than to just flog it off to the cheapest seller. I was thinking about taking Mrs D3000 to a few local camera shops and seeing what they could offer me. You never know, I could just take the cash or exchange for some new glass (no no :p) or a 35mm slr...

I like the 18-55mm....it was my first and only lens until a month ago. But it's ability in low light always frustrated me and after having the 35mm 1.8, my images are so much sharper and the colours bounce so much more it's such a difference. But of course it has the ability to be more of a wide angle and more of a zoomishy type, so I am hesitant to get rid until I find something a bit better or I'm stuck with my prime.

Yeah, film interests me. Hence why I wanna play with it a bit.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the 18-55 and the 35mm (i use it all the time, cant beat it for price).

The problem in this game is getting something that is great in low light, that has a large 'zoom' area and doesnt cost a kidney....is difficult.

If you like the range of the 18-55, then look at Tamron 17-50, Sigma do one (there are lots of debates about these things on here already :) ) etc etc, but above the 50 or 70 length things can get pricey quite quickly, although 3rd party and secondhand always helps a bit (and i mean a bit). All a balancing act and very individual/personal really. Look around classifieds might give an idea of what's generally around?

Unfortunately for you, it does look like you like a good mix of ranges as well (£) :)

Personally, what I'm doing is going for a 2 or 3 lens setup for my dSLR.

35m 1.8, Tamron 17-50 2.8, and Nikon 55-200 (had one before and regret selling it).
Use the first 2 in lower light, around the house or for the odd (very rare) landscape etc.
The 55-200 for out and about in daylight with my daughters (dont need low light, it's light, cheap and actually quite sharp I find anyway)

I may not keep the Tamron 17-50 longterm, it's fine, just thinking that I also have a Fuji X10 that I can use as well, so this well, doesnt replace it, but gives me a bit of range around the wider end...i'm always swapping things around, but trying to stop lol

Tbh, i still just love my 35 1.8.
 
Thanks for the very indepth and helpful response, it's definately a lot to think about.

I like the range of the 18-55mm for an 'all round' range but want the sharpness and greatness of the 35mm 1.8 without forking out millions! I will look into the 2 you mentioned. I think I'll hold off from getting into longer zooms for now, as I simply cant afford one:D

I'm already worrying about paying this credit for my d7000. b****r, impuslive buying and instant finance....:D

If I was was you, i'd just play around with the D7000, and the 35 for now - it's a great combo, really. Keep it simple for now, then in 6 months you'll really know what you are after:thumbs:

From 3000 to 7000, there is a fair bit to keep you busy. I went from a 3000 to a 90 and it was great.

You thought about a flash btw? That's what I bought after my '90 and started my free time with off camera flash and a cheapo sb600:thumbs: That changed my photography more than any lens could if i'm being honest.
