Yes
do any of of the photographers get paid on tillate.com, staff etc...? what about area managers - surely they get paid? how do u become a area manager?

My region has no area manager, im visiting tillate hq in london, will be starting it in my city - just thought it might be likely they are looking for a area manager and i might be in there, but if there as tight as ****, i wont bother!?

I think for some of the higher positions you migh get paid...but you have to spend a while working your way up...they arn't gonna let you waltz right into a paid position that plenty of Tillate photographers probably want too.

Plus you need experience and learn how to do nightclub photography (if you don't already).

tilllate rape you as a photographer. any pics you take and give to them they take the copyright for. Its not just a case of them using it for their site. If you are happy about giving away your copyright for nothing then they are right for you.

tillate are absoulte *****. Any photographer working for them for a long period of time doesnt realise the damage they do to the industry and how hard they make it for people to make money.

Tillate do make tons, the photographers make sod all. Area managers will make money I expect from dealings ive had with them in the past.

Also the best photographers dont allways get promotions, its those who flog their guts off doing 30photo reports a month for naff all.

Only thing they are good for is to use them to get to know promoters, then start working for the promoter direct :D

yeah i was thinking it would be good purely to make contacts who do COUGH UP! but ive been told from TL hq to 'take a copy of your photo id, and ill give you everything to get started with' so will they provide camera/speedlite? do i get contact cards? Just if im working for free, would prefer if working near drunkards, that its there camera that gets funked not mine!

Problem is everyone working to make contacts for free kills the industry. Basically as soon as you want ££££ you get ok we will get someone else from tilllate/dsi/soornights etc.... So dont go thinking you will go marching in for free, get to know promoters then suddenly start earing from them.

I work in the industry, and have actually been told, ok we want to use you but someone half as good is free and therefore better value. I wish those sites would die tbh.

They wont provide a camera, well they will loan you a **** Sony piece of crap which often go back to HQ after each weekend, you will get lots of cards.

Im sure you will be dealing with kelly Ashton probably if in london ;)

YES kelly ashton, do u know what the meeting will be like? heres the cards... hope you dont get mugged on the way to the club btw.. BYE! thanks mr exploited photographer!

Kellys a nice girl, nothing against her. Just tillate are making it incredibly hard for people to earn money. Although the way most of their photographers conduct themselves it can be easy to get in instead as sometimes venues need to have control over pics and want someone who has some ethics and understanding of what can be damaging to the club/brand image.

Had 2 tilllaters bollo*ked/asked to leave at work the last two weeks for going places they were not allowed to be.

Only positive is a free night out, which is why alot of people do it. But then you think wear and tear on your gear is worth how much per night?

As Fastworld said above Kelly is a nice girl, I work in the Leeds region and have been with them for 2 years now, it does take a while to make your way up the ladder and even when you get to senior photographer level like me you still dont get paid.

The regional managers get paid but it is a VERY nominal fee, I only know this as I am good friends with the old Leeds regional manager.

If you are doing it for the money then tilllate is not the company for you but if you are doing it for the experience of nightclub photography and for networking with promoters and club owners then it is one of the most respected nightlife companies in the business.

Over the 2 years I have made lots of connections and over time you do find that you become the photographer of choice when they need a photographer outside of Tilllate.

EDIT: Steve, tilllate do have a small amount of company cameras but they are all bottom of the range bridge sony's with no external speedlight, in the 2 years that I have been with them I have never had an incident, however for that very reason I do also have all my gear insured.

Tillate are really a slave to the promoters. The promoters use Tillate as a marketing tool, and Tillate use photographers for free stuff. Then Tillate make money from advertising and other stuff...pocketing it all.

It's another 'Yeah people will be happy giving photography away for free if we give them something nominal that doesn't really mean alot but they think it's amazing' (in this case, free club entry + queue jump).

I used to do it, but not for Tillate. And I got paid aswel.

If you want to make money from photography, there are much better ways to go about it...you don't have to put up with pretentious PR's & photographers and idiotic bouncers. Or annoying drunk people spilling Vodka and Redbull all over your kit.

You've worked for 2 years and haven't been paid? Does not compute....

It's taken 2 years to make enough contacts that you are still working for free? Does not compute.. error, error.. shutting down..

Sorry to be sarcastic, I admire your staying power, but can someone point out whats in it for togs working for Tillate other than to "Network with some club promoters"?

Have to say that before this thread I'd never even heard of Tillate.

2 years = how much wear and tear on your gear? How much money will tillate have made out of your photos? etc..

dealing direct with big promoters I know many who dont like tillate or that attitude they get with the photographers who work for them.

Im not saying anything against kelly as said shes a top lass. Just they are doing alot of damage to the nightclub photography industry, making alot of money and screwing over photographers.

I dont know many clubs down here who use tillate photographers outside of tillate tbh for the reasons stated above. Most tillate photographers are not photographers, just people who want a free night out. :D

Working your way up the ranks also isnt about quality usually it seems, more about hammering in 40 photo reports a month!

Yep it's definately not about quality, Tillate take terrible photos (dunno about all regions, but when I worked for a different company in Manchester, Tillate were awful). They just whack the saturation up as high as possible...everyone in their photos just looks like they are wearing loads of fake tan.

I did tillate for a few weeks, when I wanted to do a few tests and not worry about screwing up at paid gigs.

My introduction, included someone who didnt have a speedlite telling me how to set a camera up (when I have one), needless to say his settings were utter crap (yes he was a senior LOL), and the fact id worked in another club for 2 years immediately showed I knew this.

Dont get me wrong a lot of the photographers in the company are as you have said just people that want a free night and so just either use the crappy bridges that tilllate provide or whatever DSLR is available at the local Jessops.

I cant speak for other areas of the country but certainly in Leeds we are very well respected by club owners and promoters and this is never a bad thing, I have done many paid gigs that I have only gotten through getting to know the promoters as a tilllate tog.

Getting in for free at clubs isn't what I'm in it for, sure it is a bonus and that if you are on a night out without the camera you usually don't pay/queue because you know the promoters but you also get to meet a lot of big names in the music scene.

You may say that it is hurting the nightclub photography scene but in my mind a lot of the promoters would not pay for a photographer even if tilllate/boocas/dsi etc didnt exist, sure there is the exception of when they have a big name DJ in but they usually still pay for a photographer when this happens as they want more usage rights out of the photo's for promotional use on their flyers/posters/website.

thanks everyone for your informed responses. Certainly doesnt sound like its worth bothering with. No way am i doing 40+per month! probably just do it purely for free entry, make new freinds / djs etc... and experience of photography.. would be cool to get gigs in europe though...

do they do other event related stuff? liek video productions? im actually a video editor so maybe they have other stuff -

I know many venues/promoters who dont like tillate, many from discussions aswell. Simple reason why tillate get used is because they are free, well in a such. You have a guarenteed 2 photographers coming in in the big venues, for a nominal fee, + the fact you get advertising on the tillate site. Tillate then can sell the photos as the contract removes all rights from the photographer for the images.

If tillate were not there people would be paying more photographers because they would have to. Photos are a key marketing tool for any promoter, big or small club, either from adverising the main headliners/building an image bank for when they come in again/to getting hits on a website. + now with facebook etc.. they are being used more and more for this purpose.

Fact of the matter is if everyone was charging then they would just all start paying consistently, instead of trying to haggle you down on your set fee because someone from tillate will do it for free entry for him and his mate, and that I know because I work very closely with some key promoters.

I guess it boils down to what the venue is really. Some want quality images from respectable photographers, who wont go posting stuff which can damage a clubs reputation, others want cheap stuff and dont really give a toss.

on the subject of DSI they are incredibly better for photographers when it comes to image rights.

The euopean stuff you still have to pay for.

I was going to have to pay for my own flights and accomodation to work for them in ibiza.

Erm no thanks. Same went for the big ass party in some place each year.

40+ a month was a ****take by me, but ask anyone with back access to the tillate set up to see how many photo reports a manager has done, and its all high numbers, not necessarily good work.

'yeah, basically you want to do this...'

*bungs up ISO to 3200*

'then put it in this mode...'

*bungs into 'p' mode*

followed by

'You don't want to go changing lenses often, if you change them more than 5 times you need to send it back to Canon for repair...'

... good times :lol::lol::lol:

p.s. I did the intro for Tilllate with Fastworld. And then decided to hassle a local nightclub to be a paid photographer.

rest is history.

Interesting read. But thats what happens when you can get a brand new DSLR with kit lens and pop up flash for £299.

Personally Id rather get paid properly for my work than give it away, but I use decent equipment and not cameras and lenses that cost less than my flashgun.

Funny thing is I know tillaters who use 5Ds + L glass and 'flashguns worth more than a camera and lens'.

+ using expensive gear doesnt mean you will be producing better work.

Not my point.

My point was if you get a Xmas present of a £299 camera system then dicking around in clubs for free and taking photos of drunk girls is a great night out.....

In terms of making money from club photography - how feasable would it be charging clubs / bars £20-£30 per event? would there be demand? how would i get paid - say if i created a similar site to tillate./dsi etc.. (do they give bank details - set up direct debit, i take 20/30£ each event i cover, or just use paypal?

how much revenue would you say london makes alone in advertising revenue for tilllate?

Just a thought, think now, tilllate, dsi are so big, would be night on impossible to make any dosh
