Hi, im moving from a MBP to a mac mini as it suits my needs.

However iv alot of iweb stuff and lightroom stuff setup just the way I want it, also Iphoto library (which is on an external drive not local)

If when i get my mini i restore a previous time machine back up to it, will it make everything totally the same ? even the location of my iphoto library being on an external drive ? (drobo so thats not changing)

Im just hoping to keep pointless fiddling and messing to a minimum, I just want to carry on using it as if nothing changed, bar the mac its running on.

EDIT: Also all the software I have ? lightroom, CS4, open office etc, will that be still there as if nothing happened ?

Apple's website says 'If you’re setting up a new Mac with files from an old Mac, Time Machine can help simplify the process. Just use Migration Assistant to copy portions of any Time Machine backup to a new Mac, or select “Restore System from Time Machine” in the Utilities menu on your Mac OS X install disc. Choose any date recorded in Time Machine to set up your new Mac exactly as your previous Mac was on that date.'

and there are some instructions here http://www.tuaw.com/2008/10/29/6-easy-steps-to-migrate-your-mac-using-time-machine/

It looks easy - famous last words ? :)

Time Machine has saved me loads of times

When I recently upgraded my IMac to the new i7 I used the migration assistant & was up & running again within 1 1/2 hrs including my LR catalogs. Works a treat

My top tips thread shows you how to transfer iWeb etc from one computer to the other.

iWeb

Look in

USER :: Library :: Application Support :: iWeb

The file(s) in there are container files containing your web sites, copy them to the same location on the other machine and iWeb will be exactly where it was!

Lightroom

Go to the lightroom setup directory which should probably be in your PICTURES directory. I will contain a directory called "Backups" another called "LIGHTROOM SETTINGS" and two files one called "Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.Irdata" and "Lightroom 2 Catalog.Ircat". Copy this directory to the same location on the new machine and then copy your library to the EXACT same location on your new machine. So in my case I just copy the directories "Lightroom" and "Photo Library" from "Pictures" on one machine to "Pictures" on the other machine.

Sorted.
