Has anyone got any tips on keeping my camera stable while taking shots without the use of a tri pod? Hand held shooting is the problem.

I have got a Sigma 120 - 400 mm lens and am trying to get shots with this but they all seem to be a bit soft and this is due to my shaky hand.

Any one got any tips please?
Thanks.

Image stabilising switched on.
How do you hold then and place your feet?

I use that lens and it is a struggle.
In fact I now always make a point of being able to rest it on something.

I'm sure that I saw this link on TP

although I have used this idea for about 20 years, still got the same piece of string :D
you can also trap the string under your knee for low shots

I for one will be trying this. I have carpal tunnel syndrome which makes holding the camera steady a real struggle sometimes.

These lenses are quite heavy, especially for females who are generally less butch than us chaps. Try the string trick (not sure about bungee cord) or if you can borrow a monopod you could try that.

My thinking with the bungee cord was to allow a bit of flexibility when trying to catch a bird or plane in flight, but I would not expect it to be as good as the string.

I seem to recall that snipers did a similar thing with their rifle slings although it did not involve standing on it.

clever and simple, I like that string idea a lot

I take it everyone has mentioned elbows tucked in, one foot forward and breathing out/ or the end of your exhale as you shoot?

Beer makes me unstable.:D

Up the ISO so you can use higher shutter speeds, I often use 200ISO with the 300mil on, even on bright days.

Shooting trick from my days as an assassin. Deep slow breaths, then breathe out, pause, shoot.
