Transfer images from laptop

Yes. I'm assuming they are both on the same network (i.e. they can both connect to the internet through the same connection). If so, you will share files so theya re visible on both machines and then copy them to the desktop. Once there, you can import into lightroom. If you've already done edits, it is better to export them from lightroom on the laptop and then import the catalog on the PC after copying. That way, you get to keep any edits...

If you do not have a network set up already, then you could use a USB transfer cable. This is not a standard USB cable, it has a small lump of electronics in it which sets up a kind of server/client scenario.
If you do not want to worry about security (i.e. the laptop will be leaving the house and plugged into other peoples networks, and you don't want them to see the images) then if you have windows 7, looks into homegroups on the network. This restricts the standard windows disk sharing to those machines that are in the group (one time registratio to the group required by entering a code when a new machine or network is discovered)
