Looking for a travel tripod, here are my requirements:
- Approx £250 budget
- I am 5"10, so hopefully 150cm extended
- 50cm or less closed down (including head if possible)
- light - like under 1.5kg inc head
- sturdy enough for 40d + 70-200 is, a hook would be handy to weigh it down
- head/tripod - some form of spirit level
- head - hopefully small, probably a ball head, with pan if possible
- reliable - I don't want to be sending it back for warranty work

I could stretch the budget a little if all of the above is possible.

I'd be interested to see the outcome of this thread. Free Bump! ;)

I use a Manfrotto 190MF4 carbon tripod. Replacement is 190CXPRO4:

Closed length: 50.0 cm
Minimum working height: 8.0 cm
Maximum working height (with centre column up): 146.0 cm
Maximum working height (with center column down): 122.0 cm
Weight: 1.34 kg
Load capacity: 5.00 kg
Colour: black
Material: carbon fiber tubing + magnesium castings
Leg cross section: round
Column cross section: three faceted
Leg sections: 4
Bubble spirit level (number of): 1
Leg angles: 25, 46, 66, 89 degrees
Centre column: rapid
Centre column sections: 1

Coupled with a 460MG Magnesium 3D Head would give you a height of 157 cm and a combined weight of 1.77kg. I use a Kirk ballhead but that would blow your budget.

I had similar requirements. After extensive research, my choice was the SLIK PRO 714 CF II for £179 brand new from Devon Camera Center.

The PRO 714 CF-II has SLIK Twist-Lock Leg Locks to insure sturdy camera support.

The Twist-Lock legs allow the tripod to support up to 10 pounds of camera equipment, more than enough to handle a digital SLR. The tripod is an excellent traveler, and can easily be strapped onto most of today's photo backpacks.

Specifications:
Folded Length: 460mm
Maximum operating Height: 1530mm
Maximum centre column extension 330mm
Weight 1390g
Leg lock type Twist Lock System
4 section leg
Diameter of leg: 24mm for top section of leg
Soft grip on top section of leg
2-way leg tip rubber and spiked
Multi position leg
Suggested maximum load: 5/10kg

I like that - the suggested load is 5kgs - 10kgs.

So which is it? 5kgs or 10kgs? There is only a 100% difference!

I actually use a Manfrotto 190MFV carbon tripod (1.70kg)with Manfrotto 460MG magnesium head (0.43kg). Although it's been fine out and about on most jobs, the ultimate test will be 10-days out in Las Vegas later this year - it'd be a nightmare with anything much heavier.

London Camera Exchange will swap factory supplied tripod heads with lightweight magnesium alternatives if you pay the small (and worthwhile) difference in price.

= 2.13kg ;)

Although it doesn't quite meet your requirements of 1.5kg, a good combo I think. Out of interest though... can tripod/head combo's get much lighter?

I believe the two weights are maximum centre column extension and no centre column extension.

It takes my giottos MH1000 with 40D and sigma 120-400 4.5-5.6 OS no problem. Thats about the heaviest lens I have at the moment
