Trekking monopod?

I'm looking for a monopod/trekking pole for when I'm off into the wilds and don't want to take the tripod. Preferably something which is capable of free-standing and not simply a "rest".

I've seen the trektech trekpod advertised which looks suitable has anyone any experience of these and are there any others around worth looking at?

The weight isn't particularly an issue but the ability to use it as a pole is, so not interested in lightweight tripod alternatives etc.

My wife has the Trek Pod XL, it's very light and works well as a monopod. It has 3 small fold out legs that in theory, allow it to be used as a tripod, but it's not very stable and only usable on calm days.
