Anyone got any tips for carrying a heavy Monfrotto tripod? I might be doing some hill walking next week and depending on conditions thought I might take the tripod along. What's on the market that I could order or is there any Heath Robinson ideas.

I've got an official Manfrotto bag for my 055, but tbh it's too bulky to walk around with when you've already got a backpack on.
Other than that, I bought an optech tripod strap. Does the job perfectly, spreads the weight well - still a weighty lump to carry though! Cost about £20.

As an interim measure, I used a strap that came off of a bag which had spring clips at both ends. The advantage of that was that it already had a shoulder pad thingy already on it.

I usually use the Manfrotto bag, but between shots I'm more likely to just clip the tripod to the shoulder strap of my bag at the front. I've slipped a cheap carabiner-type clip onto the webstrap on the LHS of my Lowepro FP300. It's not for long distances, but you get used to it.
It really depends on you backpack. Whether there's any way of clipping a tripod carrier to it, or whether it's got any convenient attachment points you can Heath Robinson something to.
