Tripod legs and heads. Universal or not?

Hello everyone,

I currently own a Manfrotto tripod and Ballhead,and have recently been looking for a Manfrotto 393 lens support (without any luck).

What I would like to know is,are most Tripod legs and Gimbal heads etc. a universal thread fitting or are they unique to certain manufacturers only?

If the latter is the case,which manufacturers will fit a Manfrotto set of legs?

Most tripods come with a 3/8th screw at the top of the legs to allow compatibility with a wide range of heads from different manufacturers.

Your Manfrotto legs should take a head from any of the big players, Gitzo, Giottos, Slik etc.
