I am looking to purchase a tripod without a centre column to mount a Wimberley type head. Main use will be wildlife photography with 300 to 500 mm lenses.

kind regards
Steve

Something like this? http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/benro-c3770t-carbon-fibre-tripod.442107/

If I one day gets a large lens

requiring a gimbal head, I will get an extra centre plate for the tripod.
Will make changing from ball head to gimbal a breeze.

Gitzo Series 3 or 5 Systematic would fit the bill

Feisol also do something similar, would recommend the Rapid model. Its their version of Gitzo ALR which makes it a lot easier extend and collapsing the tripod.

Gitzo 1340 tripod will do the job if you can find one, no problems with either my 500 or 300 on mine, used in conjunction with a lens master gimbal

looks like there difficult to find, looks ideal and price wise ok. just need to find one.

Thanks, Gitzo's cost an arm and three legs, was expecting not £500 plus, but if needs must.

You can't go wrong with a Gitzo Systematic, though the Chinese clones from Benro and Feisol are also very good.

+1 for Gitzo Systematic

You could try and find the gitzo 1348 II (I can recommend) for cheaper

You might find an old Gandolfi tripod with no centre column. Wouldn't want to have carried the one I gave away after Dad died - it weighed a ton! Very solid and stable - as a child, I remember standing on the top platform!

Manfrottos non pro series tripods allow you to remove the the centre column and attach the head directly to the legs. I have the 190 CX3 and use it like that for my 120-300. I'm assuming the 055 will have the same system as well.

thanks for all the replies, given me some choices to research.
regards
Steve
