I'm looking at upgrading my tripod to a Manfrotto MT055CXPRO. my issue is whether to go for the 4 section or 3.

I've always used 3 sections before and wondered whether there any real advantage in a 4 section.

3 section is slightly lighter but heights remain the same.p

Any advise appreciated thanks
 
Shorter closed length making for easier carrying/packing is the main advantage of a four section tripod

In theory 4 sections models are slightly less rigid as they have one extra leg section with smaller tube diameter than 3 section model.

However, I always prefer 4 section as the closed length is one of the most important parameters of a tripod for me.

Most of the leg flexing is in the joints, plus the smaller diameter end section. I prefer 3-section to 4-section, as it's one less to fiddle with when setting up, but it's not a big deal either way. For sure, 4-section folds up shorter.

The other consideration is leg lever-locks vs collar-locks. Levers are quicker and provide a visual confirmation that they're locked, and they may need to be adjusted now and then for optimum tightness (some cheaper tripods don't have this facility). Collars are self-adjusting for wear, don't get caught on things and are less prone to damage.
