How comes everyone has large pictures posted and when I try & upload a picture it only allows me 200kb...

Which If I uploaded a picture that size it would be the size of a box of swan vesta's... I have uploaded pictures before in the past which where along the lines of 800x531 size but cant do it now...

Any idea's of what I may be doing wrong??

Cheers for that Ryan...

Seems that is gonna have to be the way I s'pose... Is it viewable by everyone on there if I was too upload to it or will the picture be "for my eye's only" as so to speak?

It is possible to save an image that is 800 pixels on the longest side and still keep the file size below 200kb. That's what I do with all the photos I post on the web, which keeps them within posting guidelines on most sites as well as being quicker to load for people viewing them.

To achieve that, after resizing I use the save-as option and then move the quality slider until the size drops below 200kb.

This image measures 800x567 pixels and is only 139.8kb.

Hi Trig, you need to strike a balance between Image size in pixels and the amount of jpeg compression.

Probably easiest is to resize your image in, say, Elements like this - Image / re-size image/ Check the re-sample image box and set your pixel size and then when you save the re-sized version set the quality setting to 8 or 9 I guess - You'll see the number of KB on the window.

I've not uploaded an image here but this works as a rule.

Cheers John, I use Capture NX so will get the slider moved down on that.. I usually save with best quality (whichis prob why that happens then)

Thanks to you both, much appreciated

Trig I too normally save bigger jpegs at much higher resolution, but only for images that I am going to use elsewhere. For all images destined for the web, it's necessary to go through the re-sizing and lower resolution route to get them to a level that is accepted by most websites.

Thanks Derek... That has explained it now, I thought it was me
